MAHOU SUBSETS
Last Updated: July 3, 2024
Side-Effects Explanation
The tie of a Mahou establishes a link between the thoughts of the Mahou and their Rep; this is to ensure the Mahou's powers remain relatively stable and that they can quickly get the hang of them (as well as for other purposes, depending on who your Rep is).
Normally, psychic link effects simply manifest as just a slight personality change that intensifies over time; the Mahou in question just feels like doing things they typically wouldn't, and it's almost always perceived as their own idea, not an outer influence. It is possible to become self-aware and pick out linked thoughts from the rest, but it's incredibly hard to do so and may seriously affect the Mahou's psyche.
If one were to stop being a Mahou, whether through removing their tie or otherwise, this does not reverse the effects of the psychic link. It simply keeps everything as is.
If the mentality of the Mahou happens to sync up very well with their Rep for more than a brief moment, and they accumulate a lot of energy while doing so, their appearance and mannerisms will change greatly and they'll achieve something known as an Awoken Form, which comes with a massive boost in power. In some Mahous, their link is already extremely strong for one reason or another, but not quite enough to cause this; this causes them to be on the verge of entering this state by default (this also happens if the Mahou has become self-aware). Initially there wasn't a name for this phenomenon, but once the discovery of Awoken Forms happens, this is known in the community as being "perm-awoken" or just "perma-woke".
Mahous who did the ritual improperly but still got the intended subset typically have a much weaker psychic link, and thus their powers are unstable, uncommon, and usually weaker. Improper Mahous with strong abilities are often unable to take the energy expenses and can experience immense fatigue as a result. They can still "wake up", but it takes a bit more effort. Some Mahous try to achieve this intentionally for one reason or another, despite the fact that it's incredibly dangerous.
Usually, Reps are completely unaware of and unaffected by individual Mahous, only being able to even detect something once they've amassed a large amount of them (god help you if you've been singled out by your Rep). However, the psychic link can possibly go both ways, and the Rep can be influenced by the Mahou– this is typically seen in Reps whose minds are on the same or similar wavelengths as humans, so to speak. Reps that originated from Earth and aren't exactly intended to have Mahous are more susceptible to this. Paradoxically, Reps with only one Mahou are also prone.
The abilities of Mahous are usually determined randomly upon undergoing the ritual, with exceptions (some get their powers hand-picked by the Rep they work under). Reps can enhance or diminish the effectiveness of a Mahou's abilities, as well as forcefully transform them in or out of uniform. However, changing a Mahou's set of powers, or reversing the effects of the ritual, is much more difficult and can lead to serious problems if not done correctly.
(Please note that there are many exceptions and outliers to these following guidelines, especially for perma-woke and improperly made Mahous. And while it's rare, there is still the possibility of new subsets being added to the list!)
Subset List
Common
Dusk
Due to its impressive stability, easy ritual, and practical abilities, this is the most common subset; it is considered "the default" and, for the more hardcore parts of the Mahou community, the "basic bitch" subset. Many SDDA agents are required to use this subset.
- Rep: Noden
- Domain: Provides magic pertaining to blackholes, wormholes, gravity, shadows, and combat.
- Uniform: Outfits may include hooded jackets and coats, dark reds/blues, and/or "fighting gear" (karate gis, boxing shorts, etc).
- Camera Alterations: Dusk Mahous darken the space around them noticeably. In addition, the sclera of their eyes are pitch black.
- Side-effects: Dusk Mahous tend to become more quick to anger, and more competitive. Extreme cases may cause bloodlust.
- Notable Characters of this Subset: Zavier Henderson, Posterchild
Nickel
Nickel is considered a very versatile and high-tier subset, so to speak, but it's usually associated with, uh, nerds.
- Rep: Daoloth
- Domain: Provides magic pertaining to telekinesis, telepathy, lighting, magnetism, and logic.
- Uniform: Outfits may include retro aesthetics (usually 80s or 90s, but can be even farther back) or primary colors, and can even be based off of typical RPG classes. The outfits often have unnaturally perfect angles and simple shapes.
- Camera Alterations: Nickel Mahous appear "artificial", having little interaction with light and shadow and generally looking very low-definition.
- Side-effects: Nickel Mahous tend to be more practical, and develop a calmer demeanor over time. However, this also comes with a loss of perceived self-worth.
- Notable Characters of this Subset: Agnes Warren, Blues Campbell
Support
Support Mahous are a staple in building up teams and guilds. Mahous of this subset are also sometimes seen wandering the city, offering to heal others for money, or just out of the kindness of their heart. (Usually the former.)
- Rep: Tsathoggua
- Domain: Provides magic pertaining to healing, growth, protection, and the unknown.
- Uniform: Outfits may include medical themes, pastels and bright complementary colors, or things intended to ward off (paper seals, silver, that sort of thing).
- Camera Alterations: Support Mahous are blurry or have some sort of fog or haze surrounding them.
- Side-effects: Support Mahous tend to become generally complacent and absent-minded; extreme cases may become prone to dissociation. Ironically enough for a healing-centric subset, some become willfully ignorant and less sympathetic towards others.
- Notable Characters of this Subset: Phoebe Dyer
Echo
Echo Mahous usually end up in leading positions within guilds due to their side-effects, but it also means guilds with large amounts of Echo Mahous may have issues with communication. They are often paired up with Reflection Mahous for top-notch illusions.
- Rep: Shub
- Domain: Provides magic pertaining to motion, sound, matter, and waves.
- Uniform: Outfits vary wildly from person to person, but tend to keep the general aesthetic of a musician or things related to music as well as cool dark colors with glowing accents.
- Camera Alterations: Echo Mahous do not show up on camera.
- Side-effects: Echo Mahous gain somewhat of an ego, but may also have an increased sense of responsibility and amount of compassion for their subordinates/passion for what they do, for better or for worse. More intense cases may become prone to manipulation.
- Notable Characters of this Subset: Dorian Flat (not anymore)
Reflection
Reflection Mahous are considered particularly vain, and are generally thought of as tryhards by more serious parts of the community. They are often paired up with Echo Mahous for top-notch illusions.
- Rep: Hastur
- Domain: Provides magic pertaining to light, vision, energy, and waves.
- Uniform: All outfits are, for the most part, the same; a tuxedo suit. The only real difference besides color and extra details is the type of mask obscuring the Mahou's entire face, and the tie.
- Camera Alterations: Reflection Mahous appear normally unless they alter their appearance to be otherwise.
- Side-effects: Reflection Mahous gain somewhat of an ego. They become perfectionists over time, and pay great attention to detail. They become attention-seekers– to an unhealthy degree, in some cases.
- Notable Characters of this Subset: August Silva
Jetstream
Due to their distrust of others and their odd, situational set of abilities, they're rarely seen in guilds, if at all. They're often reserved for reconnaissance missions.
- Rep: Avaloth
- Domain: Provides magic pertaining to weather, the air, and temperature– usually the cold.
- Uniform: Outfits are typically sleek and flowy, and may include cloaks, sheer fabrics, and warmer colors.
- Camera Alterations: Jetstream Mahous appear as a black silhouette sans their eyes, which glow.
- Side-effects: Jetstream Mahous tend to be more paranoid and prone to isolation over time. This may progress slower than the typical subset side-effect.
- Notable Characters of this Subset: Blaise Shepard
Rare
Ocean
Due to their unreliable nature and redundancy (as Jetstream Mahous can potentially have the same abilities), they're rarely seen in guilds. Ocean Mahous aren't taken very seriously, and the subset is considered very "low-tier"; however, as this is a relatively new subset and is still being looked into, this may not be the case soon.
- Rep: Cthulhu
- Domain: Provides magic pertaining to water, ice, memory, and the past.
- Uniform: Outfits may include dark cool colors and be, well, water themed; this can be anything from old-timey scuba gear to a fisherman get-up.
- Camera Alterations: Ocean Mahous desaturate and heavily raise the contrast of the space around them.
- Side-effects: Ocean Mahous tend to be unpredictable, and conversely become hard to surprise. While some have exhibited a knack for improvisation, it's often to the detriment of those accompanying the Mahou.
- Notable Characters of this Subset: Dylan Maraschino
Blood
Due to their explosive abilities and high resistance, this subset is half-jokingly considered the "barbarian" subset. This is currently the newest discovered subset.
- Rep: Yibb-Tstll
- Domain: Provides magic pertaining to the body, metals, healing, and death. Blood Mahous happen to be more prone to gaining very strong attacks with serious recoil.
- Uniform: Outfits can include very frilly and intricate designs, dull reds and purples, and armor.
- Camera Alterations: Well... you know DeepDream? Imagine that filter applied to the Mahou, but it's trained to look for eyes.
- Side-effects: Blood Mahous tend to become more reckless and stubborn, and can possibly withstand attacks through spite alone. In extreme cases, their impulsivity can lower the standards for a last resort by a lot, making them an emotional ticking time-bomb.
- Notable Characters of this Subset: Sanguine Lumley
Exclusive
Forbidden
A subset discovered and kept secret by Leslie de Loch, due to its dangerously severe side-effects, immense power, and because she really dislikes her Rep.
- Rep: Xexanoth
- This Rep works exclusively with one Mahou.
- Domain: Provides magic pertaining to time and parallel universes.
- Uniform: Outfits are a variant of whatever the Mahou wore at the moment they became a Mahou. They tend to have vivid cool colors, usually green.
- Camera Alterations: Forbidden Mahous appear normal save for their face, which glitches out to the point of being unrecognizable.
- Side-effects: Forbidden Mahous become noticeably more cold and ambitious from the very moment they become a Mahou, due to the unorthodox (and frankly disturbing) way the side-effects manifest.
- Notable Characters of this Subset: Leslie de Loch
World-Ending
While this is the first discovered subset, its existence is a mystery, and the method to obtain it is completely unknown. Who knows if we can ever see another World-Ending Mahou in our lifetime...
- Rep: Nyarlat (Renee Reed)
- This Rep works exclusively with up to a few Mahous.
- Domain: Provides magic pertaining to dreams, emotion, flowers, and memetics, as well as a better grasp on manipulating Mahou magic (for example, the ability to retrieve intact Mahou cores). Also grants access to the original Dream Cannon, a massive light beam attack that destroys almost everything in sight.
- Uniform: Outfits have a color scheme strictly consisting of mostly lighter grayscale colors, and occasionally shades of yellow. There is no particular outfit theme.
- Camera Alterations: World-Ending Mahous appear normal on camera.
- Side-effects: World-Ending Mahous become over-confident and seem to slowly go mad with power; the odd thing is that this is usually caused by coincidental outside influences/stress as well.
- Notable Characters of this Subset: Mercedes Adenia, Carmen Carter (formerly)
Stardust
Stardust Mahous were originally thought of as improper Dusk Mahous, as the ritual was accidentally discovered during an attempt to become a Dusk Mahou. The actual specifics to become a Stardust Mahou are yet to be found, as there hasn't been a second successful casting.
- Rep: Cthugha (Mu Alpheratz)
- This Rep works exclusively with one Mahou.
- Domain: Provides magic pertaining to fire, longevity, stagnation, and the stars.
- Uniform: Outfits usually involve various shades of blue. There is no particular outfit theme.
- Camera Alterations: Stardust Mahous appear as a mass of flames.
- Side-effects: While the side effects of this subset aren't immediately noticeable, things become very obvious when night rolls around; Stardust Mahous are extremely restless and are almost totally unable to sleep. This can impact their psyche just how you'd expect, but it can be mitigated with the occasional nap.
- Notable Characters of this Subset: Marilan Moore
